Just let me sleep

In the depths of the dark

the niggles of the day

are the worries of the night

my mind turns continually

it escalates out of control

the aches of the day

turn to pains in the night

concentrated and relentless

I just want to sleep

for the bed to engulf me

I watch the clock on the ceiling

each minute is an hour

its slow to move forward

I just want to sleep

i slow my breathing,

i count sheep

the warmth of the duvet

curls around me

I hope I drift off.

Flashing red light

I see the flashing red light

as it dances around the wood

it leaps high in the air

then is completely still

I see the flashing red light

in the distance

moving at great speed

close to the ground

I see you

on a dark misty morning

as we walk through the woods

with your flashing red light

hanging on your collar

for once

I see your walk not mine

shoes on the pavement

All manor of shoes

going in the same direction

quick small steps

fast larger ones

shuffles and slow plods

as I follow them all

Spotty wellies with bows on the back

Shiny brown brogues

black scuffed lace ups

high heels tottering

black trainers with neon stripes

furry green boots

purple doc martins

all going the same way

all on a mission

all keen to get home.

Mr Robin

the walk through the woods

is a lonely one

the dog runs off

i am left alone

then from the corner of my eye

I see movement

there on a tree trunk

is my company

‘Good morning Mr Robin

How are you today?’

He tilts his head, looks up at me

as if to say

‘very well thank you, may i join you?’

I smile and watch him

as I walk through the mud

He flies from branch to branch

his red breast puffed out

he waits for me to catch him up

we move together in silence

its nice to know hes there

and at the end of my walk

he looks once more as if to say

until tomorrow have a good day

he flies off down the path

it was nice to have his company.
